Hong Kong, Dec.5: Irish golfer Rory Mcilroy has revealed that Lee Westwood’s sizzling Sun City form spurred him to glory in Hong Kong.
The US Open champ, 22, fired a brilliant final-round five-under-par 65 to bag the 293,000 pounds first prize at Hong Kong Golf Club.
McIlroy holed out from a bunker for a birdie three on the 18th to finish 12 under and seal a two-shot win over Frenchman Gregory Havret, The Sun reports.
But the Ulster ace admitted he was protecting his world No 2 ranking after Ryder Cup pal Westwood, the world No 3, produced a third-round course-record 62 to effectively secure victory at South Africa’s Nedbank Challenge.
McIlroy was quoted, as saying: “I woke up this morning and saw Lee shoot 62 and that was another little bit of motivation.” (ANI)
