‘Pentagon has neither sought or received assurances against Pak military coup’

Islamabad, Jan 12(ANI): The Pentagon has neither sought nor received assurances that the Pakistan army will not stage a coup in the wake of a near-open conflict between the civilian and military leadership in the country.

“This is a matter for Pakistani officials-their government leaders, military and civilian-to work out,” Fox News quoted Pentagon spokesperson Navy Captain John Kirby, as saying.

The Pentagon also revealed US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairperson Army General Martin Dempsey had a telephonic conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Army General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani for the first time since December 21.

The Pentagon declined to provide further details of the conversation.

The speculation of a conflict in Pakistan has sparked concerns that the country’s nuclear arsenal could fall into wrong hands. (ANI)
