London, Jan 23(ANI): A shortage of sniffer dogs can threaten the safety of British security teams during the 2012 London Olympics.
Around 30 sniffer dogs are deployed in Afghanistan for detecting roadside bombs to protect 9,000 troops.
“These dogs are needed because of poor security planning for the Olympics. There are not enough dogs to help protect the events against a terrorist attack and it’s too late to prepare new ones. Therefore the difference is being made up by bringing animals back to the UK to help,” The Mirror quoted a source, as saying.
“And the summertime in Helmand is known as the Taliban fighting season – when insurgents lay down their harvest tools and arm themselves or make bombs. British troops could be at risk,” he added.
Tory MP Patrick Mercer stressed that sniffer dogs are needed to protect troops in Afghanistan as well as in the Olympics.
“These dogs are a great deterrent and are saving the lives of troops on the frontline and there is a need for them both in Afghanistan and to protect the Olympics. So it should be an absolute priority to train more dogs and more people to handle them,” he said. (ANI)
