Lucknow, March 3: Police Saturday busted a gang smuggling ancient idols made of ‘astadhatu’, seizing from them idols valued at Rs.5 crore in the international market.
Deputy Inspector General of Police D.K. Thakur told IANS that the arrests were made in Krishnagar after a tip off about the gang.
Idols of Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman stolen by the gang from an ancient temple in Hamirpur district were recovered from the criminals along with weapons.
The gang admitted stealing the idols in September 2009 and said they were trying to sell them when they got caught.
