London, Mar 18(ANI): Lionel Messi, who is arguably the best footballer ever to grace the sport, has said he had to make a lot of sacrifices to become the best player on the planet.
Abandoning his family in Argentina to start a new life abroad, dumping all his friends, refusing all invitations to go out partying, getting tortured by losing and willingness to play football for free were some of his incredible sacrifices.
Messi is not only the best in the world as he won three successive Ballon d’Or awards, but is also the highest paid, with an annual salary swiftly approaching 30 million pounds.
The Argentinean believes it is his dedication to the game from a very early age that has played a key part in his success.
“I always wanted to play professionally and I always knew that to do that I’d have to make an awful lot of sacrifices,” The Sun quoted Messi, as saying.
“I made sacrifices by leaving Argentina, leaving my family to start a new life. I changed my friends, my people. Everything. But everything I did, I did for football, to achieve my dream. That’s why I didn’t go out partying, or do a lot of other things,” he said.
Messi said during a very frank interview that he had always loved to play football since his early days, and his dedication to the sport has finally paid dividends.
“I’ve always really liked football and I’ve always devoted a lot of time to it. When I was a kid, my friends would call me to go out with them but I would stay at home because I had practice the next day,” Messi said.
“Nothing has changed since I was young. My friends would go out and I would stay at home. But not for nothing, because I knew it had to be that way and, at that moment, I was totally dedicated to football,” he added. (ANI)
