London, April 25: Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has been the football writers’ overwhelming choice for Player of the Year.
The striker was earlier named as the winner of the PFA Player of the Year award.
According to The Telegraph, Van Persie is only the fourth player during the last decade to win both awards in the same season, following in the footsteps of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and another Arsenal striker, Thierry Henry.
Van Persie has scored 34 goals across all competitions this season, with his match-winning volleys against Liverpool and Everton regarded as his outstanding two individual moments.
Steve Bates, the chairman of the FWA, confirmed that Van Persie had been a landslide winner of their Footballer of the Year award.
“Robin was the overwhelming choice of our members this season and deservedly so after a magnificent campaign for Arsenal,” he said.
Rooney, the winner of both awards in 2010, was second in the FWA poll while Paul Scholes, who has been so influential for Manchester United since coming out of retirement in January, was third. (ANI)
