London, May 24(ANI): Chelsea has assured Fernando Torres that he would take the club forward in the future, after the Spanish striker angered the club’s hierarchy with his comments.
Torres has scored just 12 goals in 16 months at Chelsea since his move from Liverpool, and was not trusted by interim manager Roberto Di Matteo to even take a penalty in dramatic shoot-out Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich.
The striker then grumbled about having suffered “the worst moments of my career” and demanded to know his future role so he could “evaluate if it is worth it.”
But chief executive Ron Gourlay has cleared the air over Torres’ future at the club, saying that they are confident he would score goals for us in future, which is a message straight from owner Roman Abramovich.
“We’ve got Fernando Torres,” The Daily Mirror quoted Gourlay, as saying
“And Fernando Torres is the man that we will go forward with and Fernando Torres will score us the goals. We have no doubt that Fernando Torres is a world-class center-forward and Fernando Torres will score goals for Chelsea,” he added.
Gourlay said they aren’t worried about Torres, as they think the comments he made were down to an emotional outburst.
“I’m not worried about Fernando at all. We’ve just won the Champions League and Fernando Torres played his part in that. It’s not all about goals. It’s not just about the individual scoring goals but also his teamwork,” Gourlay said.
“On Saturday he was emotional. He was disappointed that he didn’t play, and I think that led to the rest. Things are fine. There is no problem,” he said. (ANI)
