Shillong, June 20: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader P.A. Sangma has resigned from the party, his politician son Conrad K. Sangma said here Wednesday.
Conrad Sangma told IANS that his father, who is the presidential nominee of the AIADMK and Biju Janata Dal, had quit the NCP because he did not want to put his party in “an awkward position”.
While Sangma is determined to contest next month’s presidential election, the NCP is bitterly opposed to his candidature. The NCP is backing UPA presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee.
“My father has resigned because he does not want a conflict of interest in the party,” the younger Sangma said.
“My father does not want to put the party in an awkward position,” added the leader of the opposition in the Meghalaya assembly.
