Rio de Janeiro, June 19: Former Manchester City midfielder Elano is set to be relegated to the bench for Santos’ Copa Libertadores semi-final second leg against Corinthians Wednesday.
Having lost last week’s first leg at home 0-1, Santos trained Monday with three strikers: Neymar, Alan Kardec and Borges – a formation that, if adopted Wednesday, would almost certainly cost Elano’s place in the starting line-up.
Borges, who began the first leg on bench, gave the reigning champions a more dangerous edge when called upon to replace Elano in the second half, reported Xinhua.
Star midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso was rested from Monday’s session as he continues his recovery from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
“He was given the day off as a precaution, but he trained fully with the team on Sunday and will be fine,” midfielder Arouca said.
Meanwhile Corinthians coach Tite ruled out the prospect of playing for a draw, which would be enough to guarantee the club a place in the final.
“We have to be aggressive against a team of Santos’ quality,” Tite said. “In the last 10 minutes we might do that, or if we are reduced to 10 men. But you can be sure that we will be going out with the intention of winning the game.”
