Cuba will use sampling to test census results

Havana, Sep 25 (IANS/EFE) Cuba’s 2012 Census, whose phase of compiling data ended Monday, will be submitted to random sampling in order to check the quality of the island’s first population count in a decade.

The national Census director, Juan Carlos Alfonso, told official media that according to international practices, from Sep 29-Oct 8 a so-called “re-census” will be taken among 100,000 people chosen at random.

Alfonso said that the purpose is to determine whether there have been any omissions or duplications and to evaluate the quality of the responses obtained.

Up to last Saturday almost 10 million of Cuba’s 11.2 million people had been counted in the census.

Alfonso said that during the work of taking the census, which began Sep 15, there have been no important mishaps and the process was carried out in line with the established timetable.

The new census will reflect the number and geographical distribution of the population, its composition by sex and age, skin colour, educational level, job situation and marital state.

It also seeks to quantify the total number and type of households and families, number of homes and their state of repair, the different sources of employment and more.

According to figures of the National Statistics Office, or ONE, Cuba closed the year 2011 with some 11,232,000 inhabitants, of whom more than 1.9 million are under 15.
