Chennai, Sep 18: Police carried out a baton charge to disperse a large gathering of people protesting against the US-made anti-Islam film here Tuesday.
According to police, a large number of Muslims gathered on the city’s arterial Anna Salai shouting anti-US slogans and started proceeding towards the US consulate, around two km from the protest venue.
As the protesters tried to take out a procession past the barricades, police sought to restrain them and then baton charged them to disperse the crowd.
The protestors also torched a two wheeler parked on the road, police said.
The agitation put the traffic out of gear for couple of hours.
Activists belonging to Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam protested outside the consulate Friday and threw stones damaging some window panes.
Police have beefed up security around the consulate, which was closed for three days.
