Washington, Sept. 21: President Barack Obama, responding to Mitt Romney’s comments that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government, said his Republican rival may not be aware of how most Americans live.
“When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven’t gotten around a lot,” Obama said.
“I travel around the country all the time and, American people are the hardest working people there are. And, their problem is not that they’re not working hard enough or, they don’t want to work or, they’re being taxed too little or, they want to loaf around and collect government checks,” Politico quoted Obama, as saying.
“The fact of the matter is the few people who are not paying income taxes, are either paying a lot of taxes because they’re working every day…or alternatively they’re senior citizens,” Obama said, adding: “Or, they’re disabled…or veterans.”
“It’s very important for us to understand that Americans work hard,” he said, adding: “That’s what my economic plan is designed to do.”
According to the report, Obama went on to criticise Romney’s economic policies, noting that top earners are often exempt from income taxes.
“There are a whole bunch of millionaires who aren’t paying taxes at all, either,” Obama said. (ANI)
