Court asks UP, centre to decide on panel for upper castes

Lucknow, Oct 16,: In a significant ruling, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court (HC) Tuesday directed the Uttar Pradesh and the central governments to consider setting up of an commission to look into the problems of upper castes in the state.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Swarajya Party of India through its president Anupam Mishra, a division bench of acting Chief Justice Amitava Lala and Justice Anil Kumar directed the governments to decide within two months on the representation of the petitioner wherein he has asked for setting up of a commission for the higher castes.

Appearing for Mishra, counsel SN Pandey contended that while there were commissions for minorities, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes commission, backward classes, women commission and human rights, there was none to look into the problems of of the people of general category.

The petitioner had in his PIL cited the existence of Bihar Savarn Aayog and demanded a similar commission in the state.
