Indian-origin man to contest Belgian civic polls

Brussels, Oct 13: Sanjay Mukhopadhyay is the first Indian-origin Belgian to stand for municipal elections in Brussels, EuAsiaNews reported Saturday.

Belgium’s provincial and municipal elections will take place Sunday. Some second-generation immigrant candidates from Pakistan, Turkey and Morocco will also contest.

“But I am the only first-generation immigrant from India contesting the elections in Brussels,” said Mukhopadhyay, an IT expert who hails from Kolkata.

There is another Indian-origin candidate to contest the municipal election in Antwerp city, said Mukhopadhyay, who has been living in Belgium for the past 14 years.

He is standing on the ticket for the Green party Ecolo from Etterbeek municipality. Mukhopadhyay speaks fluently the two main languages of Belgium, French and Dutch.

There are over 19 municipalities in the Brussels capital region, and 587 across Belgium.
