Mexican actor to be honoured

Los Angeles, Oct 18 (IANS/EFE) Mexican actor Demian Bichir will be honoured by the National Immigration Law Center for raising awareness about the plight of low-income migrants in the film “A Better Life”.

The 49-year-old actor will be one of five recipients of a Courageous Luminaries prize at a Dec 6 ceremony in Los Angeles.

“Through his acting, Demian Bichir has put a face on a group of people who are often vilified and marginalized by the mainstream media: immigrant workers,” Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the NILC, which advocates for the rights of low-income immigrants in the US, said in a statement.

In “A Better Life”, Bichir plays an undocumented Mexican immigrant who works as a gardener for wealthy Californians while trying to raise a teenage son who doesn’t appreciate his sacrifices.

The actor’s performance in the 2011 film earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor in a leading role.

This year’s other recipients of a Courageous Luminaries prize are journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize winner who acknowledged last year he was an undocumented migrant; SABEResPODER, a media company that aims to educate and empower Latinos; the Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe law firm; and the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center.
