New Delhi, Oct 30: R.P.N. Singh, the new minister of state for home affairs Tuesday took charge of his new responsibilities and listed “security for all” as his priority.
Singh, who was named on Sunday, told reporters soon after assuming office that the home ministry, which was assigned to him as a junior minister is “an important” responsibility and that the work was “a great challenge”.
“Prior to me, many of our party leaders have occupied this office like Rajesh Pilot and P. Chidambaram. I would like to continue the good work,” he said.
“I also have responsibility to work for my party in my home state (Uttar Pradesh),” he added.
Asked about the communal violence reported from Uttar Pradesh and the situation prevailing there, Singh said: “It is unfortunate and very disturbing.”
“We will have to ask the state government whether they need more central forces,” he said.
On Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s comments on new Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar during an election rally in Himachal Pradesh, Singh said the remarks only “reflect his (Modi’s) mentality”.
“As the Gujarat elections near, it is clear that he (Modi) is rattled. I don’t want to take his name and spoil my day in office. It reflects his mentality. No one should make such comment about any woman at any point in time,” Singh added.
