Islamabad, Oct. 10: The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which attacked 14-year-old National Award Peace winner Malala Yousafzai on Tuesday has said the militant group targeted the young activist because she generated “negative propaganda” about Muslims.
“She considers President Obama as her ideal leader. Malala is the symbol of the infidels and obscenity,” The Washington Post quoted TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan, as saying.
Ehsan added that if Malala survived, the Taliban would again try to kill her.
The ninth-grader who won international acclaim for speaking out for girls barred from school by the Taliban was critically wounded when gunmen attacked the school van she was travelling in. Malala was shot in the head and neck, and two other girls were injured in the attack.
After the attack, Malala was flown by helicopter to a military hospital in Peshawar, following which President Asif Ali Zardari directed that she be sent abroad for medical care if needed.
Malala’s father Zia Uddin Yousafzai, is an educator and a member of Swat’s peace jirga, or tribal council.
“She is all right. Please pray for her early recovery and health,” he was quoted, as saying. (ANI)
