Agartala (Tripura), Nov 16: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) lawmaker Shankar Prasad Dutta has kicked up a row in Tripura after he was caught on camera abusing a policeman for arresting some of his acquaintances.
The incident occurred in Agartala when Dutta entered a police station and shouted at the Officer in Charge (OC) for arresting his supporters.
Dutta verbally abused the police personnel and coercively took away his detained supporters.
The entire incident was recorded on camera by a journalist.
Once the news of the abuse went viral, the opposition Congress Party did not hestitate to term it an act of hooliganism.
“It is exceptionally regrettable that such a thing happened. The legislator, with his gestures and postures and whatever he said, everything was recorded. It was seen that he had been arguing with the OC (Officer in Charge) and had also abused him. But he also took away with him the persons whom the OC had detained. He took them away by force. It is a case of legal offence,” said Pijush Biswas, a local Congress party leader.
The CPI-M leadership has ordered an inquiry against the errant legislator.
CPI (M) general secretary Bijon Dhar said Dutta is a very popular and well mannered person, and it was unfortunate that he had misbehaved.
“We have enquired into the matter and we have discussed, and we have heard as to what was the incident, from him. Considering all these things, we should not behave like Congress legislators. It should have been avoided. Some utterings are there which are not being approved by the party,” said Dhar.
The CPI-M here alleged that many Congress leaders, including former state chief Samir Ranjan Barman, had assaulted police officials and attacked police stations in the past, but the Congress leadership had refused to comment. (ANI)
