Agra, Nov 27: Speakers at the first World Congress on community−based rehabilitation (CBR) of the disabled here Tuesday stressed the need for a level playing field and empowerment through legislative initiatives.
Delegates from more than 80 countries participated in the three−day Congress which began Monday to discuss laws, social scenarios, developmental needs, human rights and related issues of concern to the disabled.
Harjeet Singh, deputy secretary, ministry of women, family and community development, Malaysia, said that there was still need to work on developing a “level playing field” for the disabled.
Peter Coleridge, a researcher from Britain, emphasised the need for adopting Mahatma Gandhi’s principles for the betterment of the disabled.
Javed Abidi, vice−chair of International Disability Alliance (IDA), emphasised on how community−based inclusive development was needed for the disabled.
Nawaf Kabbara, president of the Arab Organisation of Persons with Disabilities, spoke on the importance and role of people with disabilities on leadership.
