10 deer die of unknown disease in Pakistan

Islamabad, Jan 13: Ten deer fell ill and died of an unidentified disease at a zoo in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi.

The Dawn said three white fallow deer — two females and a male — and a female hog deer were found dead in their enclosure Saturday.

Four white fallow deer and two hog deer — all females — died a few days ago.

Zoo officials have denied the deaths, but the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has set up a committee to inquire into the report.

The committee will explore the cause of deaths at the zoo, look into samples taken from dead animals, inspect cages where the animals were kept and suggest preventive measures to avoid diseases in future.
