Amritsar, Feb 15: A total of 445 kg of heroin, worth Rs.2,225 crore, seized in the last few years was burnt here, an official said.
The drugs consignment, seized by customs officials in the last four years in this border belt of Punjab, was burnt at an industrial plot in this city, 250 km from Chandigarh, in presence of senior officers.
Customs Commissioner K.K. Sharma told media: “Today (Friday), we have destroyed 445 kg heroin. This was seized by the customs and DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) officials between 2008 and 2012 in 26 different cases.”
Punjab has a 553-km long international border with Pakistan. Smuggling of drugs along the border belt is common.
Most of the drugs seized by the customs and DRI officials are carried from Pakistan.
In October last year, customs officials had seized a consignment of 105 kg heroin stacked inside cement bags imported from Pakistan on a goods train.
