Anatomy of Valentine’s Day

Melbourne, Feb uary 10: From the best blooms to the lacy lingerie, lovers try their best to fulfill their romantic partners’ desire on Valentine’s Day.

For florist Sean Cook, the owner of Mr Cook in Sydney, Valentine’s Day starts early.

“Everyone wants their flowers first thing in the morning, so a team usually comes in at 3am to start stripping roses for the first courier run at 8am. Beforehand, I’m battling at the flower markets – people are fighting over the best flowers that you can’t get anywhere else,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.

Tiffany Bernard, the manager at Chez Olivier in Melbourne, says reservations start three weeks before Valentine’s Day, but people still call on the morning, and by dinnertime they have no tables left.

She also said people usually ask to have roses on the table for when they arrive.

Someone even asks to have a ring put in a champagne glass, she added.

Everybody wants to look his or her best on Valentine’s Day.

Vicky Bouza, a therapist at Ciao Bella in Sydney, said that on Valentine’s Day they open at 7am and aim to send the last person out at 7pm.

The biggest trend on the day is “vajazzling’, which involves waxing off the hair before gluing on diamantes in designs such as hearts or crosses, Bouza stated.

Spray-tanning and eyelash extensions are also popular, as people want to look their most glamorous, he added.

According to him, the most out-there Valentine’s Day request is pubic hair dye. Clients who don’t want to wax come in for a blue or pink dye instead, he said.

For lingerie shops, Valentine’s Day is the busiest time of year after Christmas.

“The week before Valentine’s Day, we start displaying the most sought-after colours: black and red,” said Maria Pople, store manager at IM Boutique in Melbourne.

“Women tend to use the day as an excuse to buy something their man has always wanted but haven’t been game enough to buy, such as a corset and suspenders. And the men buy items they think she’ll have to wear because they bought them,” she added. (ANI)
