Chandigarh, Feb 26: Cases of most crimes against women went up in Haryana in 2012 even as the cases of rape dipped a bit, the Haryana assembly was informed Tuesday.
While the number of rape cases registered in 2012 were 686 compared to 733 in 2011, other crimes against women went up. Of these, the number of gang-rape cases last year were 118.
Cases of molestation of women went up from 464 in 2011 to 521 in 2012, as per the data submitted by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala in the assembly following a calling attention motion by four legislators to highlight the growing cases of crimes against women in the state.
The total cases of crime against women went up from 5,373 in 2011 to 5,955 in 2012, he said.
The abduction cases involving women went up from 634 in 20112 to 733 last year. Harassment cases increased from 490 to 534.
Dowry deaths saw a marginal increase from 331 in 2011 to 333 last year. Dowry harassment cases went up from 2,711 in 2011 to 3,148 in 2012.
Surjewala said the state government was taking steps to control crimes against women.
