Lucknow, Feb 21: Armed robbers Thursday fled with jewellery and cash worth Rs.10 crore (Rs.100 million) from a gold financing company’s office in the Uttar Pradesh capital, police said.
The heist took place in Alambagh when a gang of robbers barged onto the office of Muthoot Finance and held seven employees and the manager hostage and fled with the booty.
The robbers locked the staff in the washroom and kitchen, broke open the locker and escaped with jewellery and cash.
The company gives people cash loans against deposits of gold and ornaments. Its office here is located on the second floor of a multi-storey building near a bus station.
The office’s customer care executive, cashier and two assistant accountants told police that all the robbers wore masks and barged into the office as soon as they began the day’s work.
They also held the armed guard captive and later locked up all of them at gun point. They snatched their mobile phones and the locker keys from manager Abhay Shankar Tiwari.
The gang filled the gold and ornaments in three bags and fled, after which the employees managed to free themselves and raised an alarm.
Senior police officials, dog squads, fingerprint experts and special operations group sleuths rushed to the spot.
Muthoot Finance officials told police that an estimated Rs.10 crore worth of gold was taken away.
