Washington, March 19: Seven Marines died and many were injured in an explosion during a drill at a Nevada army base in the US Monday night, Xinhua reported.
The blast, which took place at Nevada state’s Hawthorne Army Depot, was being investigated and the cause was yet to be ascertained.
The mishap occurred during “a training exercise shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, killing seven service members and injuring several others with 2nd Marine Division”, a Marine Corps statement said.
The Hawthorne Army Depot stores and disposes of ammunition. The facility is made up of hundreds of buildings spread over more than 230 square miles (about 370 km).
The explosion is not related to ammunition stored at the depot, said a depot’s spokesperson.
