New Delhi, Mar 6: The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) headed by Finance Minister P Chidambaram is likely to meet today to discuss the third round of spectrum auction.
The EGoM on telecom is also likely to take a call on the number of telecom circles in which spectrum would be auctioned.
The Supreme Court on February 15 had directed government to put entire spectrum for auction that was freed from cancellation of 122 2G licences.
The government had put on sale 271.25Mhz of spectrum in November 2012. 514.8 Mhz of spectrum was freed after the Supreme Court order last year cancelled 122
To comply with apex court order, DoT will have to auction airwaves in at least 20 circles
Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal had earlier said the government would do another auction for the unsold spectrum by Mar h 2013.
“The intent is to try and have another auction before Mar h 31. We will discuss how to move forward and take a call on it,” Sibal had earlier said.
Referring to the lukewarm response to the Supreme Court mandated auction of 2G spectrum, Sibal said: “The government did exactly what the courts wanted it to do-that is sell the airwaves, or radio frequency spectrum, that was vacated after 122 licences and accompanying spectrum issued in 2008 were cancelled by virtue of a apex court order.
