Shillong, March 6: Senior Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Rowell Lyngdoh Wednesday took over as pro-tem speaker of the Meghalaya assembly.
Governor R.S. Mooshahary administered the oath to Lyngdoh here in the presence of Chief Minister-designate Mukul Sangma and his senior Congress cabinet colleagues.
Lyngdoh won the assembly elections from the Mawkyrwat assembly constituency in South West Khasi Hills district.
The pro-tem (from “pro-tempore” in Latin, which translates as “for the time being”) speaker would administer the oath Thursday to the newly-elected legislators of the 60-member state assembly. He would also conduct elections of the speaker and the deputy speaker during the first session of the ninth state assembly.
