Bhubaneswar, Mar 15: Odisha Law Minister Raghunath Mohanty today resigned on moral grounds after his daughter-in-law filed a dowry case against him and his family members.
Mohanty’s daughter-in-law had, in her complaint last night, alleged that the minister and his family in Balasore were demanding Rs. 25 lakh in cash and a Scorpio.
The woman, who married Mohanty’s son Raja in June last year, alleged that her in-laws were given Rs. 10 lakh in cash and jewellery at the time of marriage.
Mohanty met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik this morning and said he was stepping down on moral grounds.
“Allegation against me and my family is totally false and baseless. I have submitted my resignation to the Chief Minister on moral grounds,” Mohanty said.
Mohanty, MLA for fifth consecutive term, had been a minister since 2000 and held important portfolios including parliamentary affairs, industries and IT. (ANI)
