New York, Aug 17: Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius will reportedly be charged with pre-mediated murder for the death of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on August 19, with the trial beginning in 2014.
According to New York Daily News, the double amputee Blade Runner will be indicted on the same day Steenkamp, whom the track star admitted to shooting at his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day, would have celebrated her 30th birthday.
Stating that Pistorius’ trial will start in early 2014, a year after he shot dead Steenkamp in what he claimed was a tragic accident, prosecutors said that the South African sprinting star could face a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted.
According to the report, a six-month investigation on the incident ended this week, in which the investigators were reportedly focused on cell phones found at Pistorius’ upscale home as well as the toilet door through which he shot.
The report further said that if the extra charges, related to Pistorius shooting a gun out a moving car and firing one accidentally at a restaurant, are added, then the prosecutors may show Pistorius as ‘trigger-happy’ in his trial next year.
However, Pistorius’ lawyers have said that they are yet to see a copy of the indictment papers, which include information like a witness list and some details of the evidence police have gathered since Pistorius fired four bullets from his licensed 9-mm gun in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine’s Day, fatally injuring Steenkamp.
