New Delhi/Jodhpur, Sep. 2: The Congress Party on Monday welcomed Jodhpur Court’s order to send self-styled godman Asaram Bapu to judicial custody till September 15, and said the decision was reassuring as it reiterated that no one in the country is above the law.
“This is the process of law and this is what is applicable to every citizen of the country. I think the message is right that nobody can escape the hands of the law-they will reach wherever you are, no matter who you are,” Congress spokesperson Renuka Chaudhary said.
“If you are found guilty, if there is evidence that you have done something against the law, then that is the price we have to pay, unfortunately or fortunately, that is the system. It is reassuring to know that the law does take its own course,” she added.
Earlier today Asaram Bapu was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the Jodhpur court.
Additional Solicitor General Anand Purohit said that Asaram Bapu’s bail application will be taken up by the court tomorrow at 11 am.
“In his bail application he has said that some politicians are behind the accusations and that he is unwell,” said Anand Purohit in Jodhpur.
Before the Jodhpur Court’s decision, Jodhpur Police on Monday said they are confident that they had enough evidence against Asaram Bapu in a case that is ‘purely criminal’ in nature.
“We have gathered sufficient evidence in the last ten days. Whatever has been said by the victim, we have collected the evidence which collaborate with her statement. We are making it a foolproof case,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajay Pal Lamba said in Jodhpur.
“There is no conspiracy. It’s a pure criminal case. It is purely a criminal act. On the part of the police, whatever investigation and action is to be taken in such a case, we are doing that. Whatever the accused wants to say, he is free to say,” he added.
Asaram Bapu has been booked under Sections 376, 342, 506 and 509 of the IPC, Section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and Sections 23 and 26 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
Besides the summons served on Asaram Bapu, notices have also been issued to the manager of the Chhindwara gurukul in Madhya Pradesh, the hostel warden and the main caretaker of Asaram, who was present at Manai Ashram in Jodhpur on August 15, when the alleged sexual assault took place there. (ANI)
