New York, Sep 29: Well known Pakistan journalist Hamid Mir on Sunday said Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had not described Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a ‘Dehati Aurat’ (village woman), as had been claimed earlier.
In an apparent retraction of his derogatory statement, said to have been flagged on the micro-blogging site Twitter, and on Pakistan television, which prompted an angry and firm rejoinder from the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at a rally in New Delhi, Mir said: “Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif didn’t make any derogatory mark on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.”
Mir issued the statement after the two prime ministers had met in New York today.
Mir’s allegation became the central focus of debate in the political sphere in India, after Modi brought up the accusation at a rally in New Delhi this afternoon.
The controversy was rooted in a comment made by on Geo TV alleging that Sharif had used the term “dehati aurat” to describe Dr. Manmohan Singh, while meeting him and NDTV’s Barkha Dutt on Saturday.
Dutt has, however, maintained that no such comment was made at the meeting. (ANI)
