Addis Ababa, Oct 10: The African Union (AU) has made an urgent call for international assistance to facilitate the operationalisation of the international support mission in Central African Republic (CAR).
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairperson of the AU Commission, made the call while meeting Babacar Gaye, special representative of the UN secretary-general for CAR and head of the UN Integrated Office in the CAR (BINUCA), reported Xinhua citing a statement released Wednesday from the pan-African organisation.
The chairperson made an urgent appeal to the international community to provide the necessary support to the rapid operationalisation of the African-led International Support Mission in the CAR (AFISM-CAR).
Referring to the serious security and humanitarian situation on the ground, Dlamini-Zuma stressed the need for urgent international action.
She underlined the importance of the urgent adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution that would support the deployment of AFISM-CAR and pave the way for the provision, by the UN, of a flexible and predictable support to AFISM-CAR, within the framework of the partnership between the AU and the UN.
