Delhi Minister Rakhi Birla conducts surprise night shelter checks

New Delhi, Jan.4: Delhi’s Women and Child Social Welfare Minister, Rakhi Birla, one of the youngest cabinet ministers, undertook a surprise inspection of night shelters on Friday night to assess the plight of the city’s shivering poor.

Birla, a former journalist, has been making surprise checks at various government-run shelters ever since she took charge as a minister.

“No corrupt person will be spared, as these night shelters are constructed for the poor. But those in authority, even though they are way older than me, are not ashamed of lying on camera. They are saying that they have not taken any money and they are keeping the place clean, but everyone can see how clean and hygienic the night shelter is,” said Birla.

During the inspections, officials were summoned to explain the situation and offer solutions.

Meanwhile, night shelter dweller, Dinesh, complained of poor facilities and lack of hygiene and cleanliness.

“We are not getting any facilities. There is a bad smell all around. We need more facilities,” said Dinesh.

The debutant AAP has promised to stand upto people’s expectations and focus on fulfilling the poll promise of free water and a massive cut in electricity bills.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which emerged from an anti-corruption movement, trounced the ruling Congress party in Delhi in recent polls. But the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party with 32 members.

India’s ruling Congress party, which could manage only eight members in the recently held assembly polls, agreed to give support to AAP to form government that got 28 seats in 70-member Delhi legislature. (ANI)
