Johannesburg, Feb 26: Manchester United has been dealt a heavy blow in their Champions League bid after they crashed to a 2-0 shock defeat to Greek side Olympiakos at the Karaiskakis Stadium in their last 16 first-leg match on Tuesday.
Eleven points off fourth-place Liverpool in the Premier League, United’s hopes of playing in next season’s Champions League are already fading, and they now face a fight to stay alive in this season’s competition in the return leg on March 19.
According to Sport24, goals from Olympiakos players Alejandro Dominguez and Joel Campbell, on loan from Arsenal, gave the hosts a well-deserved victory and left them on the brink of the last eight for the first time since 1999.
Previously unbeaten in the group phase, David Moyes’ side, which lost for the first time to a Greek team, conceded defeat on a chastening night, failing to muster a single shot on target, the report added. (ANI)
