Serena wanted `wildcard` entry for Dubai Championships to combat `practice boredom`

Johannesburg, Feb 19: World number one Serena Williams has revealed that she had requested a wildcard entry for the Dubai Championships to battle boredom once she believed her back injury was on the mend.

The American has been sidelined with an aching back since losing a three-set, fourth-round match to Ana Ivanovic at the Australian Open last month.

According to Sport24, Williams admitted that she is bored with practicing every day, and as her back was not better in time for her to play at Doha at the level she excepted, she looked around and found that the Dubai event is a perfect chance for her to ‘relive her boredom’.

The report mentioned that along with singles, Williams and her older sister Venus, who also was given a singles wild card into the main draw, were granted wild cards into the doubles as well.

Williams, who received a first-round bye, will play Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in the second round at Dubai, the report added. (ANI)
