Johannesburg, Mar 19: Real Madrid has cruised into the quarter-finals of the Champions League following a 3-1 win over Schalke 04 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, leading to a 9-2 aggregate victory over the German side.
Although Real boss Carlo Ancelotti named a weakened side, however, he was forced to introduce Gareth Bale inside the first 10 minutes when promising forward Jese Rodriguez had to be taken off the game after appearing to suffer a suspected cruciate ligament injury.
According to Sport24, Cristiano Ronaldo had scored twice, first when he put Real ahead with his goal on 21 minutes, and the next, and his 13th Champions League goal of the season, as he collected a loose ball from Bale and stormed forward to drill low into the net 16 minutes from time.
Although Tim Hoogland’s deflected effort brought the visitors level before half-time, however, the report added that Bale squared for Alvaro Morata to fire home after Ronaldo had struck the bar. (ANI)
