Ahmedabad, Mar. 30: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani on Sunday criticized the UPA-led Congress government saying that the party is leaving behind a legacy of a mismanaged and stagnant economy for the one that would come to power next.
“In the year 2004, when the Congress came to power, Chidambaram (finance minster) had accepted that the NDA government had left behind a robust economy with a growth rate of 8.6 percent,” said Irani.
“Today, the Congress is leaving behind a legacy of economy which has been mismanaged, whereas the NDA had left behind an economy filled with possibilities. It is extremely unfortunate that India which once was walking towards the path of development has a limited growth rate of just 4 percent,” she said.
“The country which was considered to be place of innumerable possibilities in the international market now shows stagnancy and negative growth,” she added.
She further said that the Congress had left an economy with a negative manufacturing growth.
“The Congress has left the industrial growth at zero percent. When NDA was in power, the manufacturing sector’s growth rate was 7.3 percent, but now we have a negative manufacturing growth. Policy paralysis of India has become an international issue today,” Irani said.
“This is the third time in the history of India that a negative growth in the manufacturing sector is being noted. Today, the current account deficit of the country is 45 billion dollars. The Congress is leaving the burden of subsidy which is more than 1,20,000 crores,” she said.
“The question is that the Congress had said that due to the experience of Chidambaram India would benefit a lot economically, but if you look at Chidambaram’s record it does not reflect any benefit,” she added.
She also said that if anyone has benefited from the Congress it was some of their corrupt ministers.
“Under the UPA government, rupee has depreciated by 38% but the congress has no answer for this. If anyone has benefitted from the Congress it is their corrupt ministers. A lot of their leaders including Chidambaram are not even contesting the elections this time,” said Irani.
“It is clear from the response to the rallies of Narendra Modi that people want to see him as the next prime minister of the country,” she said. (ANI)
