Rooney may get captaincy snub if Van Gaal becomes new Man U boss: Report

London, Apr 30: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney may reportedly be overlooked for the post of captain in favour of his Dutch teammate Robin Van Persie if Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal is appointed as manager next season.

Rooney had been lined up to succeed the outgoing Nemanja Vidic as captain at Old Trafford next season under previous boss David Moyes.

However, the Daily Star reports that Van Gaal would prefer to make his fellow Dutchman Van Persie the new United captain if he gets the Old Trafford job on a seven million-pound-a-year deal, even though the decision would prove unpopular with fans.

The report mentioned that Van Gaal, who made Van Persie Holland captain ahead of the more-experienced Wesley Sneijder when he became national boss in 2012, is a close friend of the former Arsenal player, although it added that overlooking Rooney could spark unrest between the teammates who are widely rumoured not to get on too well.

To make matters worse Rooney has run through brick walls for United this season in a bid to help his team salvage some pride, while Van Persie has spent long spells on the sidelines denying rumours he wants to leave, the report added. (ANI)
