New Delhi, May 12: The Election Commission on Monday directed the the Varanasi Returning Officer to file an FIR or complaint against Congress candidate Ajai Rai for displaying his party symbol, which is barred on the voting day.
The poll body asked to file an FIR under sections 126 and 130 of Representation of Peoples Act (RPA) against Rai.
Earlier in the morning, Congress candidate from Varanasi, Ajay Rai had worn the party symbol while casting his vote at a booth in Ramnagar. This prompted the poll body asking for CCTV footage of the controversial act of the Congress leader.
Rai however, defended his action saying that he has the right to wear the symbol as a candidate. He also claimed that the case against Narendra Modi cannot be compared with his action as the BJP candidate had shown his party symbol after casting his vote in Gandhinagar constituency. (ANI)
