Varanasi, May 12: The Election Commission has sought CCTV footage of Congress leader Ajay Rai wearing the party symbol on his shirt while casting his vote at a booth in Varanasi on Monday.
“Flashing of party symbol is a violation of election rules. A report in the matter will be sent to the EC,” said Special Election Observer, Praven Kumar.
According to television reports, the EC has directed the returning officer of the area to file an FIR against Rai.
Rai came to the polling booth along with his family members this morning to cast his vote, while wearing a badge of Congress election symbol on his kurta.
He, however, defended his action saying that he has the right to wear the symbol as a candidate. He also claimed that the case against Narendra Modi cannot be compared with his action as the BJP candidate had shown his party symbol after casting his vote in Gandhinagar constituency.
Meanwhile, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi said Ajay Rai’s, wearing of his party’s symbol inside the polling booth while voting was not a major factor for the BJP, which he claimed is set to win achieve a huge majority in the general elections.
“A party (BJP), which is winning with a huge majority should not bother about such small things. Let the Election Commission take care of it if it feels so. All we want is that the voters must be able to cast their ballots freely and peacefully,” Joshi told media here.
Joshi asked: Everyone takes their hand into the poll booth, should we cut it off?
On April 30, in a similar way, Narendra Modi had addressed a press conference immediately after he cast his vote in the Ranip area of Ahmedabad, and had displayed a replica of the BJP’s symbol, the lotus, during the event.
This action of his drew severe criticism from the opposition and the Election Commission. (ANI)
