Guwahati, Sep 7 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday hinted at fighting next year’s assembly elections in Assam on its own and claimed it would put up a better performance compared to the past. ‘We are keen on going alone and putting up a good show in the elections with the help of the youth of Assam,’ party MP and newly-appointed election in-charge for Assam, Varun Gandhi told journalists. Gandhi arrived in Guwahati on a three-day visit, aimed at chalking out strategies for the 2011 assembly polls.
Guwahati, Sep 7 – The all-India strike called by central trade unions Tuesday impacted life across Assam Tuesday though tea and oil production were not hit. The strike was total in the transport sector with buses, trucks and taxis keeping off the road. Shops and business establishments were closed in all towns, and educational institutions were hit by the strike, mainly due to lack of public transport.
Guwahati, Sep 1 – Two businessmen kidnapped at gunpoint over the weekend from Assam’s main city Guwahati were rescued by security forces early Wednesday, officials said. A police spokesperson said Bishnu Kedia and Sanjay Agarwal, both abducted Sunday, were rescued from Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati. ‘Due to intense security operations, the kidnappers probably felt the heat and abandoned the duo for fear of being captured,’ a senior police official said.
Haflong (Assam), Sep 1 : Police have arrested two militants of the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) from Mahur town near the Haflong hill station in Assam. The duo identified as Thancha Khingsai and Lansen Kuki, both in their twenties, were caught on the basis of a tip off received by police on August 30. The militants led the police to a place where they had stored their arms and ammunition said A K Sinha, Additional Superintendent of Police.
Guwahati, Aug 31 – An apex trade body in Assam has announced that prices of all essentials would shoot up by another 10 percent with immediate effect, triggering angry criticism of the ruling Congress by the opposition parties Tuesday. The Kamrup Chamber of Commerce (KCC) said the wholesale prices of all essentials were expected to go up by another 10 percent with transportation costs shooting manifold. ‘A Supreme Court order recently limited transportation of goods from 22 tonnes to 9 tonnes in a truck and this has led transportation costs to go up, and to overcome that the prices of essentials would have to be increased by at least 10 percent,’ M.P.
Silchar (Assam), Aug 16 – Twelve militants of the United Democratic Liberation Tigers (UDLT) outfit surrendered to the Indian Army in Assam, army officials said here Monday. Formed in 2008, the UDLT, a separatist outfit of non-tribals, was active in Hailakandi district of southern Assam. ‘The militants led by their leader Habidur Rahman Laskar surrendered to Brig.
Guwahati, Aug 13 – At least five people, including three of a family, were killed Friday when lightning struck them in a field in Assam, police said. A police spokesperson said the incident occurred at village Dudhnoi in Goalpara district, about 120 km west of here. ‘All the victims were working in a paddy field when lightning struck the area Friday afternoon,’ a police official said.

The fear of terror attacks prompted them to keep away from taking part in the national day celebrations. Guwahati, Aug 11 – A 13-year-old student in Assam is battling for life at a hospital after he fainted in the classroom following physical assault by his teacher. Sailan Bardhan, a Class 8 student of Vivekananda Higher Secondary School in the western Assam town of Bongaigaon, is now in the ICU of a local hospital. Class teacher Gopal Krishna Ray beat the student so severely that he became unconscious — the immediate provocation for the assault was that Sailan requested the teacher to mark him present in the attendance register as he entered the classroom a little late.
